I want to remove my trigger guard so I can install a Magpul replacement, but that roll pin is TIGHT. I really don't want to break the lower. Is there some way to lubricate it without risking that the replacement will fall out?

What I did with the exact same project was to take a fine file and slightly bevel the starting end of the roll pin. Before I got out the hammer I found a piece of alum. stock that fit in the gap. Then I used a very small brass hammer and tapped the pin in. You could put a tad of grease on it. It would not hurt anything nor make it prone to working loose. Just dont whack away on it with a 16oz framing hammer and accidentally miss and hit the "ear". I also used a roll pin starting punch. Lyman makes OK ones and Shuster makes a better set. The pin fits up inside the punch rather than a little blister on the punch tip. Hope that helps.Comment

he's having trouble removing it i believe not installing... your just going to have to support it on something and slowly work it out with a punch. i personally HATE messing with the trigger guards, i cheat though and install them on my vise with a drop of lubeWhat I did with the exact same project was to take a fine file and slightly bevel the starting end of the roll pin. This kinda makes me wish my motorcycle chain tool had a smaller rivet pin. It progresses as you turn a wrench and pushed the rivet right out without too much fuss. Something like that would be great for roll pins, Becquerel there would be no impact, just steady pressure with plenty of support on the other side."A man's got to know his limitations." - Harry Callahan

Looks like all the link tools I see have supports in the way that would prevent them from being used for the roll pin. Of course those could be dremeled away if the rest of the opening is sufficient. Or I could devise a purpose built tool. If only I had a mill."A man's got to know his limitations." - Harry Callahan
