flash hider to muzzle brake??

Can you take a yhm phantom, weld a washer on the end to make a muzzle brake to = featureless?

I have access to tig, machine shop and enough knowledge to make it non perfect. Legally could I do this on my 14.5" pinned welded barrel ( which I installed) or is it better to remove weld and add a muzzle brake?? I was under the impression the big difference is in the bore of the outlet, not the slots etc.

probably not. there isn't really a clear definition of f/h vs brake. one major criteria is what it's advertised as.

The Muzzle Brake•A muzzle brake is a device attached to the end of a rifle barrel (or cannon, or pistol etc.) in which small cuts or slots are contained. The main purpose of these openings is to reduce recoil and muzzle rise by diverting the gases expelled out of the end of the barrel during firing. The propellant gases that normally would exit the end of the barrel are diverted out of the side and top holes, therefore reducing the forces that cause recoil via backward and upward thrust.
The Flash Hider•Also known as a flash suppressor, the flash hider is a device attached to the end of a barrel that is used to hide the flash signature of the burning gases expelled out of the barrel during firing. This is especially effective when firing at night or in dim light. The flash-suppressor helps a soldier firing at night escape detection by the enemy.The basic hider designs are described as a prong, a cone or a birdcage.
Differences•The designs and purposes of each are entirely different. A muzzle brake is very useful when dampening of recoil is needed such as when firing an extremely powerful round. It finds its niche where powerful rounds are needed, such as in long-distance target matches and in the hunting fields. It would be a bad choice to use at night because it has a tremendous muzzle blast and shoots out bright burning gases in every direction.

The flash hider reduces the flame that results when a round is fired. The military uses this for obvious reasons. It is also used by law-enforcement for certain purposes.The flash suppressor is highly desirable to a sniper, as it is difficult for the enemy to determine his position.

its already pinned and welded. but maybe its not a big deal to remove

ooohh, ouch. That sucks. Mines was supposedly "pinned/weld" but it came off during shooting so I was lucky.

I dont know how you would get a welded flash off. Maybe grind enough to pass the weld so the pin will come out then unscrew?

notice in your pix, there IS a noticable difference in the slots. after all the rework and refinishing afterward, you would probably be better removing/replacing. if it's blind pinned you'll need to grind off the weld and drill out the pin. if welded you'll need to grind off the weld(s).
