Am I missing anything? (AK Build)

OK, so I'M getting ready for my first AK build, a Yugo RPK. I already ordered my 1.5mm Yugo flat, slant break, and rivet set from AK-builder. What else should I order? All I have to go on is a picture, so I don't have an exact parts list.

One thing I am worried about, how does 922r compliance work with these home builds? Do I need to do replacement on enough parts to get compliant?

    Thanks for any help!

On most AKs you need to replace 6 parts to meet 922(r) compliance. I'm not sure if the Yugo RPK is any different. I'd recommend getting a Tapco G2 fire control group. It counts as 3 US parts. Do not use the FCG parts from your parts kit, they may be FA and should be disposed of/gotten rid of properly. Do, however, keep the springs and pins that come with it.

With the G2, flat, and muzzle break you will be 1 US part away from being compliant. I recommend a US made pistol grip for that. From what I'm told it is easier than buying a gas piston, and better than using mag parts for compliance parts (you never know when you may slip in a foreign made mag.

The only other things I see missing are some 10 round mags (or 30s if you have them legally), a solar tactical mag lock or kydex grip wrap, and some ammo.

*Don't know if you ordered it with you flat and rivets, but I believe you'll need to order a center support rivet as well.

Nice kit. Buy a FCG retaining rail as well. It keeps in all your pins. It should only be like 7 dollars.

The RPK is usually built as a machine gun, so yeah... I probably will need to completely ditch the FCG, I hadn't considered that. What's the difference between a single hook and double hook kit, I can't seem to find a clear answer.

Still debating on whether I want to go with grip wrap or mag lock. I might start off with the lock and see how I feel about it, since I have the slant brake already and no evil features apart from the pistol grip.

It looks like AK builder doesn't have a 1.5mm receiver center support, maybe it doesn't need one?

Yup, I'm acquainted with that, wasn't sure if I needed to worry about 922r was the issue. Hopefully my budget will keep me from building any others.

An extra hook Okay, now I'm done being a smart***, the single hook will work with the AK-Builder flats as-is. Some people prefer the double hook on the extremely off chance that one of the hooks snaps off, so you still have a functional weapon. You can just dremel or file out another notch in the flat if you want a double hook trigger kit.

For the trigger retaining plate, I think the original poster meant this FCG pin retaining plate:
Red Star Arms Retaining Plate replaces 'Shepherd's Hook.' Locks hammer & trigger pins. Fits most AKs. USA steel.

                  Cute 8bit

But that explains it, so there's no real need for one, that's good to know.

The pin retaining plate isn't strictly necessary though right? If I end up buying more parts from AK-builder I'll probably order one just because they're so cheap.

How do you plan to attach the lower rails? MIG or spot weld?

I've heard of instances where people have taken the sear spring (the long paper clip like spring in your picture) and bent it into a crude sheppards crook to substitute for the real crook or redstar retaining bracket. But really, the bracket it's so cheap and is really just alot easier to contend with. This will be one of the last steps of your build and by that time, you probably will be too tired to want to contend with an annoying spring. A retainer is necesary since the pins can become unseated without it.

Most of the parts kits were originally assembled as select fire, and may by accident contain illegal parts despite requests on the part of the purchaser not to include them. Oaklander did an excellent thread on this. The parts in question should be discarded immediately.

Good luck on your build and you might want to consider spot welding your lower rails, its alot easier than MIG.

Refer to this thread for general information about building:

And this thread about the select fire parts:

You may also want to print out a copy of the ATF letterhead provided in the first thread to include in your rifle case once your build is finished. This will aid with during an LE contact when questions arise as to why your rifle has no serial number.
