    Parkerizing-Duracoat question

Have a question about removing the WD 40 from parkerizing. I parkerized my new AK build and intend to apply Duracoat next. I was going to use brake cleaner and the Duracoat degreaser to remove the WD 40. However, I am afraid if will flash rust before I can paint it. What has been your experience is it going to rust. If there is light rust how do I remove it before painting without messing up the park. I have put a lot of work into this gun and don't want to screw it up now. i am tempted to just leave it parkerized.
What do I do. Thanks for the help.

Well, unless you live by the coast I think if you clean/degrease just prior to spraying (10-20 minutes) you'll be fine. I blasted the park off my AK pistol build (lots of surface rust) and DuraCoated within 1 hour with no problems.

Good Luck! Post pics and let us know how it turned out!

Brake cleaner just prior to dura coating.

Thanks guys. what do you mean you blasted the park off. did you sandblast after you parkerized. I am going to paint right over the park as soon as I clean the WD 40 off. I was just worried that I would get instant rust from the temp change caused by the brake cleaner evaporation. Maybe I worry too much but I do not want to have to blast it again. I would just leave it parkerized as it looks nice but I already have $50 worth of Duracoat on the way.

Be careful using brake cleaner - some leave a residue behind that will keep the paint from bonding to the surface. Electrical contact cleaner works too.

I removed the old park because there was too much rust. I did not re park because I was being lazy and have had very good results with just DuraCoat in the past.

Some brake cleaners do leave a residue but, it is my understanding that some do not. Can anyone verify this?
