    Metalshop class in Venice?

I pulled the below off of an old post from 2007 on here. Anyone know if this is still going on? ar15barrel posted it. I will try to find his contact info on here. I want to learn how to mig weld:

"If anyone is interested in a metalshop class, one is currently offered at Venice High monday evenings from 6:15 to 9:00 or on Saturday from 9:00 to 3:00

    There is no curriculum.
You work on your own projects.
The instructor shows you how to use the machines.
$50 for the year of monday nights or $50 per semester of saturdays.
    Class started last week.

I'm doing the monday night session to learn to tig weld.

Shop 8 is near the corner of Walgrove and Venice.
    Enter off of Walgrove."

A quick google search turned up this:

There's a summer session starting July 12th and fall starts on Sept 9th.
Also it looks like it's Monday & Wednesday now, not saturday. $57 for the first term.

Depending on scheduling Im thinking of signing up for the fall, so thanks for the heads up!

I took one of those ROP classes at my local high school. Learned ALOT and my semester long class was $35.

        Yep.
        No more saturday classes.

Monday through Wednesday of this week are the last classes of the spring semester.

I've been to the first two classes of the summer term (Monday and Wednesday nights 6-9pm). So far, the classwork is a little basic, but having access to all of those tools will be amazing, so I'll be patient for the summer term and just do a lot of listening.

Hopefully, by the time the fall term rolls around, I'll get checked out on those tools that are missing from my garage and be able to get rolling on my list of projects.

Is anyone else from Calguns currently attending the VCAS summer term?

I missed this week because I thought it did not start until next week and scheduled jobs every night this week.
            See you next week though.

Oh man. Working in a metal shop with Randall sounds like fun.

Too bad I'm up north or I'd be there!

The new perfessor (Juan) is providing a cirriculum for those who are taking it for school credit or just plain newbies. Since I know enough to be dangerous, I'm going to attend for a bit and see if the classroom stuff gets more useful or I'm just going to head out to the floor and get checked out on the various machines.

Pizza: not last week, but a rumor was floated that pizza and/or in-n-out might periodically make an appearance.

                  Metal is sharp, respect it.
Welding involves electricity, heat, and gas. All 3 can hurt you, bad.
Welding will fry your eyes, if your burning galvi, do not breathe the fumes. If your eyes feel like they have sand in them, you got flashed, don't burn for a while. Make sure you use the correct sheild gas for the material and wire your using.
Never wear gloves when using any rotating machinery. (those blue nitrile gloves are OK)
Know how to shut down any piece of equipment your going to use before you use it. Having your arm sucked into a set of 6" rolls is a crappy time to learn how to shut it off.
Do not bypass safety procedures, you may not hurt yourself, but your buddy could be the guy who gets hurt.
                  PPE at all times.
Carry tweezers, especially if your running a mill or a lathe.
Loose clothing = missing limbs, same goes for the wedding ring, take it off.
If there is a machine locked out, leave it.

The others, well......they just never learn.

That does sound like a pretty good 'quick list'.

I've taken lathe and welding classes a long time ago, and I've spent a few hours recently picking Randall's brain about what's going on during various operations.

I'm also seeing if I can make a positive pressure filtered mask for welding after noticing some effects last time I did some GMAW. So far, found a nice low-profile mask from a CPAP machine that fits under my helmet with a hose and is okay on comfort. Still figuring out the fan and filter.

All you really need is a fan and a resperator. Also when your getting ready to burn make sure the plume isn't going to flood your hood.

The rules as explained to me were that they did not want you making weapons or drug paraphernalia.
Barrels and stocks have not been a problem though.
