Using a punch....I must be retarded

For some reason, I just can't use a punch right. I have tried many different brands and everytime I use them they either bend, break, or the tip mushrooms. I use punches mainly for the small retaining pins that hold the front sight block and gas block on AKs. What am I doing wrong? Is there a different more efficient way to get the job done without using a punch?

x2, I have the same problem, I always figured I was buying cheap punches, but I just keep buying the blue ones from home depot.

No, nothing wrong. Even some of the best "Starret" punches bend, mushroom
while removing FSB taper pins on AR15. Some pins are pressed in with a hydraulic press. You can try to soak in in a penetrating oil, try to freeze it or heat it up carefully. But the best thing I find to work is a SECURE fixture to hold what ever you are working on along with the BIGGEST size punch you can get away with just to get it to move and then use the appropriate size punch can remove it the rest of the way.

Spend the extra money and buy a decent set of punches, such as these from Starrett. Made from tool steel and hardened.

Speedracer's post was not there when I typed this up! Still, use quality punches, if they mushroom a little, grind 'em down.

Just remember Home Depot's return policy. If you buy it there, they will replace it. Its just good VOC.

Ever hear small hammer=small mistake big hammer=big mistake?
Using a large hammer on an AR may be overkill....

Why not buy some from Snap On for 200 bucks? Lifetime warranty, and if you send them back 30 times, you will get your money back!

Try using a smaller hammer. I suggest an armorer's brass hammer. That's what I've always used and had very few punches break.

Usually the cheap ones from HF would not last that long. Especially the ones that are longer punches.

Usually long and skinny punches don't work that well. Start off with something as short as possible so you won't bend them.

you are using a starting punch, right? there is a guy on the files that sells a cool press jig if you have a press. 3# is a bit too much hammer, no control.
