Scope Ring Heights

How do you determine the correct ring height when mounting a scope? I have a Pre-64 Winchester Model 70 that I want to mount an older fixed power Weaver on. I'll be using a Leupold STD one-piece base.

Leupold customer service will help you. although, I just mounted a new 2-8 leupold pistol scope on my 308 XP100 and the information they gave me was not perfect. The low rings caused me to have to radius the rear of the factory base to clear the adjustment ring. Not a big deal but full disclosure would have been nice.
