What is the basic difference?

7.62 is a 30 cal with quite a bit of energy behind it and I believe the 5.45 was supposed to be the answer to the 5.56.

5.45 = 5.45x39mm

5.56 Nato = 5.56x 41 45mm

The 5.45 is loaded with a slightly smaller diameter bullet and travels at a slower fps than the 5.56- it was kind of like the soviets 5.56. At least thats what I have learned.

Its supposed to do nasty things to the body, and anything has to be better than 5.56. I could go on but Ill just say in my own experience 5.56 just isnt enough.

5.45 does have a hollow tip that does make the bullet mushroom upon impact.

As far as I know it doesn't mushroom as expanding rounds are prohibited for most armies by the Hauge conventions. The round is designed to fly straight, but upon striking target the steel plug in the bottom of the bullet moves forward into the empty space causing it to become unbalanced and erratic causing a grater amount of damage.

As far as better or worse ballistics that is an ongoing argument, but you cant begin to compare them on basis of price! 5.45 is cheap! 1080 rounds for $119.00! Whats 5.56 600 rounds for $200 or so?

I'm surprised that it took 12 posts to bring up.

Pricing is Approximate given 1K+ quantities I use gun-deals.com for the basic pricing.
5.45 (corrosive / steel cased) = 11-12 cents/rd + ship
7.62x39 (corrosive / steel cased) = 19-20cents/rd + ship
7.62x39 (non-corrosive / steel cased) = 20-22cents/rd + ship
5.56 (non-corrosive / steel cased) = 21-23 cents/rd + ship
5.56 (non-corrosive / brass cased) = 32-35 cents/rd + ship

One more thing to consider:
* Last I check, there were NO domestic manufacturers of 5.45 ammo. If the State Department decides to kill the import of this ammo (like chinese steel core 7.62), it wouldn't surprise me to see the price rise significantly.

* At 11-12cents/rd, you might want to stock away a case or five of 5.45 if you have the cash and storage space even if you don't own one right now.

* IIRC, 7.62x39 IS mfg domestically but the price is not very competitive compared to the russian stuff.
