    Mauser re barrel

I have an old CIA mauser 98 sporter in 270 win. Its a hand me down from my grandpa who passed. He wasnt a gun guy so im prety sure it wasnt maintained properly. I been looking at it lately and i was thinking it would be cool to have a third hunting rifle (behind my 7 remmy mag and my 6.8). It has two problems at the moment. First the safety got all turned around on it so I cant close the bolt. and the saftey hits the wood if I try to close the bolt. the saftey appears to be a bealor (sp?) type. I have tried to play with it but am prolly gonna take it to a smith to fix unless somebody has an easy fix. Second issue is i see a bit of rust in the barrel and to me that just seems unsafe. Im thinking its just better off to buy a new barrel from midway for about 80 bucks and see what happens. Will a new barrel bring some accuracy to the rifle? or is it a combination of action and barrel and if so which is more important. I will admit bolt guns arent my fortay. Semi's make sense to me but bolts are a brand new beast. Am i better off letting a smith replace the barrel and fix the bolt. Any recommendations for smiths in sac? Also any idea of how much it will cost? i have always done my own gunsmithing so I am clueless on this. Thanks for the help in advance.

I would clean the bore - brass brush and kroil or equal -- maybe even a little toothpaste and oil -- You could also make a lap by casting a bullet on an old bore brush wire mandrel. Then see how it shoots. Quite possibly it will shoot fine.
I expect rebarreling will cost at least $300 -- Possibly better to sell as is and buy another. my ha-penny
