6-48 Tap help

I picked up a Rem 700 and was trying to install the EGW HD scope base that I got for it and ran into a problem. The screw holes in the receiver are all gummed up. I just need to run a 6-48 plug tap through them so the screw dont get messed up.

Anyone in Riverside happen to have one I could come borrow for literally two minutes? Else I will just order one from Midway for $1.99 and have to wait. Patience is not my best ability.

I would suggest a bottoming tap to clear threads to the bottom of hole -- there are not that many threads in that hole and if you don't clean them all up your screw may bind up before tightening down.
Try kens tool supply on marlborough -- or google for any machine shop supply house. 6-48 is not a home depot item -- perhaps even a gunsmith will have some -- my ha-penny

Yes, very different.

I plug tap has a tapered tip and is best to use on through holes. A bottoming tap has a shorter tapered tip which allows it to get close to the bottom of a blind hole.

If it is just "gummed up" and you have a spare screw, you can make your own thread cleaner by cutting a couple of slots in that screw.

Ill have to check to see if I do. Pretty sure I only have the plug screw that came with the action. Im def not going to use those since they are installed using a flat head. Id rather not strip the head on one.

I think Im going to just order one up and be done with it. I guess now have an excuse to order the items on my Midway wish list.

It's best to chase the threads while the barrel is removed.
That's how I ususally do it when I tear down and rebuild a rifle.
