    1911 extractor fitting

Basically, I paid a manufacturer to install an extractor, firing pin stop, and barrel to my slide. They charge me $120 for the labor. I noticed that the extractor sticks out past the ejection port cover and also extends past the rear of the slide. When I contacted the manufacturer, they basically told me that I am SOL.

I am curious to know if this is the usual rate that gunsmiths charge for this service.

Looks more like it was just assembled, rather than properly fitted. Does the extractor sticking out of the breech side keep it from locking fully? The extractor poking out of the back of the slide is just poor workmanship IMHO.

Who did this? If you don't mind telling us?

I originally noticed that the slide to frame fit was not flush. Upon further inspection, I saw that the extractor was in contact with the barrel.

It is a really long story but basically I bought a kit gun so that I can fit/assemble. It included a frame, slide, and barrel that is already fitted. I tried to find a way to purchase one and in the end decided to convert it to a single shot. To meet the single shoot length requirement, I sent them a 7" barrel.

I thought that the company could just assemble everything and I would later fit all the parts together. I talked to a local gunsmith about what I was planning and he informed me that the company would most likely have to do some smithing. I then just decided to let the company fit everything as I didn't want work half done.

I am now deciding if I want to dispute the charges with my credit card as the firearm manufacturer is basically telling me that I am SOL as I purchased a kit gun.

They did not ship me the original barrel that was suppose to come with the kit. That is all I really want as I do not want to deal with this company anymore. I will reveal the name if they don't send me the barrel that I paid for.

How did Fusion block the magwell? (The cocking serrations clearly show it is a Fusion.) FWIW, that extractor wouldn't work with a "single shot" anyway since it would have to snap over the rim which would be like a push feed. The hook wouldn't last too long.

Just curious,... if Fusion sent you the barrel, wouldn't it be a complete kit plus the barrel you sent them? Would it still be considered a single shot meeting the exemption criteria?

Sounds like there was a lack of communication between you and fusion. I believe they understood you wanted the 7" barrel fit to the slide and you wanted the rest of the pistol assembled. That is probably what they did, and what they charged you for.

They then figured you wanted the goofy 7"bbl instead of the normal 5" one so they did not include it.

I don't think the tail end of the extractor being not flush with the rear of the slide is not an issue. I have more than a few 1911s from different manufacturers and there is a bit of variance in how well they follow the contour of the frame. You've posted excellent photos, I don't think the back end is too proud butthat's just my opinion - it is more than many I've seen but if the gun functioned properly it wouldn't bother me, especially as a parts gun.

Have you determined the hook touches the barrel when a round is chambered?
The reason I ask is that there may be a difference between the extractor at rest and in use. Does the extractor otherwise work properly by holding the chambered round in place?

I would say that if the extractor touches the barrel - not good. The 1911 extractor functions with the right amount of tension on it, pounding against the tail end of the barrel as she goes into battery isn't going to help.

Fitting a new barrel often leaves a little slide overhang. The real issue is how far the slide travels rearward before the barrel unlocks.

I sent the company a safety magazine with a screw that goes from one side of the grip to the other side. So the magazine release doesn't do anything.
If you looks at one of the pics about you will notice it is orange in color.
From my understanding the single shot requirement is 6" barrel with 10.5" over all length and the capacity to accept only one cartridge.

I agree that there was a communication issues and that I take responsibility with that. However, I paid for the kit which includes the 5" barrel that I did not receive.

The extractor sticking out the end isn't a huge issue. However, I have a TRP which I paid much less which has a flush extractor. I just expected this 1911 to have a higher quality compared to the Springfield.

I have not fired this firearm as the extractor touching the barrel will likely cause undue stress to some of the parts. I have not DROSed the firearm but I will check tomorrow to see how it extracts with some snap caps.

STI also has kits with the same rear slide serrations.

I paid $120 for the fitting of the slide and $285 for the frame. I'm just trying to figure out if this price is fair with the work I received.

If you are expecting that the extractor will snap over the rim of the round, you will cause undue stress anyway and the hook will break. A round needs to slip up the breech under the extractor hook for it to work as it was intended.

How do you have it in your possession?

Most gunsmith fit parts are oversized so they can be cosmetically fit after assembly. I'm sure this extractor would be great in a slightly longer slide so there would not be a depression. If the nose of the extractor is hiting the barrel it will break in short order. If its not touching and hold the case correctly there is no problem.

An gun will run regardless of the fit and finish, that said I've fit many extractors and if I charged someone $120 it would be nice and flush with the slide. Next time do it yourself, if not hard, you'll learn how your gun works and there are many websites that tell you how.
                        where are my pistol mags?

While I think the back end of the extractor not being flush is OK, I took another look at the fit of the slide to the frame on the back end. It does appear the slide is too "proud" with respect to the frame. It may work fine but I think fom the photos - too much. I don't know of a fix, I suspect a longer barrel link would put the slide forward a bit, but could result in unlocking issues and peened over lugs in the slide. How's your "up & down" on the hood of the barrel with the slide forward, no mag and hammer back - any play? If there is, I think a longer link will put the slide and barrel farther forward. This is just my layman's opinion, I'm certainly no gunsmith but have tinkered a bit.

The firearm is not in my possession as it is still at my FFL.
I'll be going by later tonight and inspect it further.

It was $800 for the frame, slide, and the barrel that they did not send.
a little over $500 in parts
                            $400 for them to fit
