    RIA 1911 issues

I'm having some issues with my full-size RIA 1911 .45

I'm the original owner, and the gun has about 400 rounds downrange. Never any problems before. I detail stripped and cleaned it 3 days earlier to this. Ammo I am using is PMC bronze. When I initially racked the slide to chamber a round, it slam-fired. On every subsequent shot, the slide would fully cycle but the hammer would not be cocked. I could manually cock the hammer and fire. I stopped after about 7 rounds and put the gun away. When I stripped it after I got home, I see what looks like a v-shaped chunk out of the frame. Is this a defect, or could I have re-assembled it incorrectly in a way that would cause this to happen? Sorry for the blurrycam. And is this the cause of the malfunction I was experiencing? Thanks for any help/advice.

It doesn't look normal to me! I just put a RIA on layaway and will be picking it up in early March.

Hopefully someone with one can give you a first hand response. I will be following this thread.

I've had someone tell me that it's not unusual for that area to look like it does. I'm still not sure what's caused my malfunctions but unless anyone else has ideas I will clean, re-assemble, and try again.

First, I am not a gunsmith. I just like my 1911.

Looking at your pictures and the description you gave, it looks to me like the disconnector was put in backwards. The flat side on the bottom should face forward (towards the trigger bow).

The crack/chip is in a non essential area so it should not be a problem. Just make sure the disconnector is not bent or damaged (it probably made the chip/crack) and the diconnector hole is not burred up.

I wish I could change the title, since I now believe it to be misleading but this appears to be just a case of improper re-assembly. I put everything back together again and will test it out at the range. Please don't let my incompetence reflect poorly on RIA...

no reason you shouldn't be able to, just edit it.

The v notch came from machining the disconnector hole. It's more cosmetic and should not affect function.

Shot it today and everything was great! Good learning experience I suppose! So it was definitely me putting it back together wrong and not the gun. I believe the sear spring was not correctly in place.

3 finger spring positioning is very critical. Now you know.
