generally the darker stain will make the knot darker than the rest of the stock. You can bleach the area of the knot to make it less noticable.

    thats a big knot.

I just want it to be more uniform in color, do you mean just bleach the knot or bleach the entire stock? I would be happy with the ****ty wood if it didn't have that knot.

Im pretty sure that no matter how much bleach you put on, its going to be noticeable

if I buy a stock already stained a dark red (seen one in the marketplace) will bleaching it and the hand guards and refinishing both of them together make them the same color or will I need to start with a set of furniture with the same finish?

Turns out its not a knot, its more like tar or some other substance.

My plan is to sand it a little then soak it in 25/75 bleach water mixture for a day. Then soak it in vinegar and water.

                  Would this be ok?

Acetone to remove the tar, then sand and stain the wood.

Throw everything in the dishwasher and it will come out ready to sand and stain. The metal parts will be super clean and you can use Aluma-Hyde II on it for a great finish.
