Many remington bolt knobs have a casting void in the middle of the original knob.
When you machine down the knob, sometimes you hit the void and it makes it very difficult to cut the threads.
Also, the knobs break off because of the void.
By chopping off the lnob and drilling the hole, I completely eliminate the void and add on a stronger piece of steel in the form of the setscrew you see in the pictures.

As a practical matter, it's much easier to cut the knob off and weld something else on.
Some people also cut the knob off and then drill/tap and install a long setscrew that then gets another larger setscrew threaded on to it for the knob.
Either method is easier than turning down the existing casting.
I did a bunch of knobs by turning down the casting and threading it and it was a LOT of work.

Many people don't like mailing their bolt out for fear that it gets lost.
I'm in so-cal and I do jobs like this while the customer waits...

Keith is a good guy, ask him how he attaches his knobs and where he learned how to do it.

Since the OP is in Kalifornia it might be better for him to do a little checking and save the shipping.

Randall is correct the Remington handle is a casting and is full of voids. 99.9% of the time the little ball on the end of the handle is hollow to some degree. Castings don't like to have outside diameter threads cut into them, this will introduce stress fractures. Ever wonder why the instructions tell you to apply some type of JB Weld or epoxy before threading on the knob where the Remington handle has had outside threads cut into it?
