    Barrel swapping

I have a friend with a Mod. 19 S&W that needs to have its barrel replaced. The cylinder needs replacing also. She's searching for both on-line & I expect she'll have the replacements soon. But then she'll need to have them installed. Which brings me here.

Is there anyone in north San Diego county that can do this for a reasonable fee?

If it needs that much work, she should sent it back to the Factory. They'll also refinish it so everything matches.

Are the barrel and cylinder corroded? How's the crane? Chances are S&W can do it cheaper than a gunsmith.
    Luck favors the prepared.

When my friend had kids, she put the thing away in a closet. Fast forward 20 years, the last one is married & out of the house & she finds that the Smith has a rusted barrel & cylinder. The cylinder is probably OK to use, but looks bad. The barrel is rusted on the inside as well & so is probably unsafe to use. The rest looks good.

Yes, the factory can probably do this, but money is a factor (when is it not?) & so she asked me to see if I can find a garage 'smith here to get the job done for cheap. Still, I suppose that a call to the factory won't do any harm & so I'll pass on your advice.

      Thank you.

It's likely cheaper form the factory.......... Give them a call, then shop for prices. These days good revolver 'smiths are hard to find, and seldom inexpensive if any good.

Pay to have it checked by a Gunsmith. Someone with little experience may think it is unsafe when it is totally safe to fire just ugly. Pretty cost.

Another vote for letting the factory do the repair.

send it to the factory or an authorized warranty center, In your area try Bolsa Gunsmithing in Westminster, if they can't do it they will send it to the factory.

lots of things need to be done to replace these parts, timing, yoke alignment, BC gap, etc, best left to some one who does it every day.

Now that I think about it the barrel can be changed by the warranty center, but the cylinder is "factory only" just take it in and have them check it, they are the pros

                No gunsmith....Send it to S&W.

The factory has all the jigs, fixtures and gages to correctly time and set the b/c gap for the barrel. The factory will be the cheapest or factory service center will be the cheapest and the best.

I she decides that the expense is too great and decides to sell it, I'd be interested in looking at it. Always looking for a project.

First, my apologies for not responding sooner. Anyway, I called the factory.

They tell me that they have seen this before (no surprise) & they'll charge $194 to refurbish the thing. That's about the same as what a used barrel & cylinder would go for. That presumes that both are still in good enough shape to be refurbished. But, if their exam reveals that this is not the case, they'll just ship it back no charge. In which case she can then try swapping things out. She's not likely to take you up on your offer because the thing has some sentimental value. But, I'll pass on your offer just in case.
