I have a sightmark laser boresighter in 223. it worked decently well. got me on paper at 100 yrds without firing a single shot.

I think I paid in the ballpark of $30 for it

remember that these things go through batteries like water.

Be careful when you buy the Cabela's version. Mine was WAY off from the factory. I got suspicious before I ever went to the range. I put it in my barrel in the house and propped the rifle into position aiming at a spot on the wall 15 feet away. Then I rotated the laser and sure enough, I got a 3" variance at 15 feet. I then put it in V-blocks to double check. Sure enough, it was off 3" at 15 feet. I've never bothered to change the laser to aim properly. So I've never used it.

I also noticed you have to use it at dusk. It's not bright enough to use during the day. When I was checking the aim in my house, I had to do it in the evening. Even in the house during the day it was too dim from 15 feet to see the dot on the wall.

What are you sighting in? If you can get a clear look through the barrel, it is a cheaper and still accurate way to bore sight

Noobert, I still use the barrel method. But when I am just that little bit off I use the bore sighted as a grid to tell me how much I need to move my cross hairs either left right up or down.

Otherwise yes the barrel is the cheapest and a very accurate way to do so.

I have used the Sweany Site-A-Line for many years, with great results. Can easily get to within 2 MOA. A little more expensive than the others, but well worth it. Manual boresighting works well too. The US Marines show a procedure for it in one of their shop manuals for the M16, for getting the front sight post plumb.
I'd be a little leery of the lasers. I would think for a laser to be really accurate and repeatable in this type of setup, it would be way beyond the price range that they usually sell for.

If you keep your eyes peeled on ebay, you can find a decent mechanical type boresighter.

I got one from Insight Technology (AN/PEM1). You can find them on Ebay from $100 and up, retail on these are upwards of $800! They come with different mandrels for .223, 7.62 and .50 cal. The advantages of it is that you boresight the laser to your particular barrel and then boresight your red dot. I would never pay that ridiculous price so check Ebay.
