    Rust Removal

So there are tons of articles on how to remove rust but nothing I can find on the implications of the rust on the gun. The gun in question is a old home defense 870.

If I remove the rust I remove the finish. I don't intend on refinishing a cheap 870; it sounds cheaper to just buy a new gun. What does it mean to have a gun with no finish? What are the risks? Wouldn't I run the risk of rusting again? How do I prevent this?

I know this is a terrible idea.... but lets pretend I leave the rust. What would I expect to see happen (anything significant as it rusts out?)? Is there anything I can do to try to stop the progression?

If you remove the rust keep it well oiled and in a dry place. Do you have pics to show how bad the rust problem is?

It can probably be done for $20.

Pick up some Evaporust from your local auto parts storeand soak the shotgun in the stuff.

      Clean it off.

Repaint with some AlumaHyde II (preferred) or Krylon "Camouflage" paint.

Oil all surfaces inside and out.

      Test for function.

It's only a couple hours of work. If it's cheaper for you to buy one.. you must get paid more than me!

Is the 870 blued or that krinkle black?

If it's blued use 0000 steel wool and some penetrating oil. Unless the rust is really heavy it should come right off. It might leave some pitting.

If it is the black just oil it and scrub it with lint free paper/cloth towels.

Thanks for all the input. I will post some pics in the near future. The receiver is lightly covered in rust. The barrel has a few spots where the rust is thick (you can knock it off with a finger nail). There is some mild pitting. I am not sure what the current finish is... It is a black but lacks the luster of a blued metal.

you'd be surprised how much rust a gun can have and still function...
