    General gunsmithing questions.

    Hello everyone,
I am interested in finding out what tools I will need and how to perform the followings tasks on Sig Sauer and HK handguns.

    1. Trigger jobs and installation of SRT/LEM/Match Trigger assemblies
    2. Barrel crowning
    3. Smoothing out the rough edges on slides and receivers
    4. Refinishing slides and receivers
    5. Inspecting and replacing worn out parts

Can anyone point me in the right direction to find information on this subject? I have a decent amount of mechanical proficiency and I have been building, repairing, and modifying paintball markers for many years. I receive a lot of gratification for doing these sorts of things myself instead of sending stuff out to get worked on. It allows me to gain greater knowledge on how and why each item works the way they do.

Tools are secondary to the knowledge, if you know how, you will know what you need. Working on firearms carries a higher responsibility, for obvious reasons.
Barrel crowning, for instance can be accomplished in different ways, each requiring a different set of tools and skills.
The Brownells catalog is a good place to start looking.

A 3M deburring wheel does a great job of blending endges of frames and slides.
About $40 and will mount in a common 6" bench grinder.

Sig won't sell you the SRT components. HK won't talk to you if yer not a cert HK armorer.

Get yourself a "cratex" kit for your dremel. About $70 from midway or brownells. Grrrreat for triggers and deburring. Cuts fast but leaves a mirror finish.

Barrel crowning needs a lathe. Even if you want to use thos elittel hand crank piloted crown cutters, you'll need a lathe to make a pilot that fits properly.
