    Receiver heat treating

Before I press my barrel in I wanted to see what the collective answer would be with regard to heat treating my Tapco receiver. I already took a torch to the Trigger/FCG holes and quenched it. But what about the receiver as a whole with the trunnions fixed and the center support similar to what Nodak does?

If a yes, how hot and how long?

    TIA

I've done it... it is super cool and a total PITA

    3 steps

first you need to relieve the stress.... IIRC 600 degrees

then you heat treat it in a jig sealed in stainless foil at a bazillion degrees then rip the foil off and quench it in brine solution within 3 seconds

then it is too hard so you bake it for an hour (don't drop it b4 this or it will shatter like glass)

if you did not warp it or shatter it, then you will have a super cool heat treated reciever that works just as good as your spot treated reciever, don't forget to treat the ejector

      Wow..that is a process.

Considering there is a turkey brining in a 5Gal bucket in the kitchen and two pies will be cooked tonight this will be waiting till Friday when Spaceghost comes over if we do this.

Yes you need to fully support the steel. Hey Squid, I know a guy who works at a heat treating place in Santa Clara.
That thing need to be brought up to 1600F if it's 4130 Chro moly and quenched in oil. Thats gonna make it brittle and hard. Then it'll need to be anneled, thats around 800F then allowed to cool on it's own.
