    AK rail welding service?

I wonder if a calgunner will start offering rail welding for local builders? If you have it dialed in you could provide a valuable service and earn some money for more tools and parts. You don't have to have an FFL if somebody brings their bent flat and waits while you do the work, correct? I have some more flats I need rails welded in so I could be the first customer. I bought a spot welder but when my friend Charlie of Overland Plating passed away it went with his estate and I can't bring myself to buy another one.

I have that spot welder you mentioned, when my brother (Charlie) passed away, I helped his son shane, sell a few of his firearms to pay for the funeral, he told me at the time he thought that spot welder belonged to Charlie and just take (anything) you want.

I did not know it belonged to you. At that particular time after his death, everything was very confusing and a complete mess. Just PM me your address and I will send it to you. There was no other tooling with it I could find, just the spot welder with the copper tongs, all I have done with it was to check if worked, it checked out OK.

Thank you for your friendship to my brother, he spoke highly of you.

The thing that makes you need an FFL is when you keep a serialized receiver for 24 hours.

Or if someone else builds the receiver.
You can get all the help in the world, but you must be the "builder".

Absolutely.... not everyone would have done that.
Most people with no use for something would have sold it, and many people with a use for it would have clammed up.

Thanks very much. Shane had asked me If Charlie had anything of mine and I told him just a Romy barrel. Shane gave me one right away. I had the spot welder box in the garage and thought the spot welder was in it until I went to use it. I'm sure it will get put to good use if you send it to me. I've gotten together with a great bunch of guys that teach others to build AKs. They don't look as good as the custom builds you do in your shop but we have a good time. I love the camaraderie, some amazingly generous guys.

That Romy barrel was a funny story. Charlie had a barrel that somebody had drilled the rivets before removing it from the trunion. Charlie and I didn't have the skill to weld up the holes so he tried some hard solder he got from Brownell's. I drew the short straw and shot it while we were out in the desert. We scrambled around picking up the brass to examine it. The brass had nice clean holes in it that matched up with the holes that had been drilled in the chamber of the barrel!

Shane went through all the stuff and took what he wanted. I ended up buying a bunch of things that nobody else wanted for a ridiculously low price. Shane was very happy that the stuff would be put to good use. It was a good chance to have some things that remind me of the time I got to spend with Charlie.
