Do you have an empty mag in the well?

If I remember the .308 version is a bit longer and has a larger diameter hole...

yup have an empty brand new dpms 10rnd mag inserted....it feels like its just barely skimming across the catch. when i pull back all the way on the charging handle i cant even manually engage the catch

The DPMS 308 bolt catch is 308 specific, it does not fit the AR15 correctly.

I've noticed some of my 5.56 lowers have sticking issues with bolt catches in particular, I usually have to polish them where they meet the lower. I don't know about your problem in particular, but maybe it just needs to be polished a little bit.
