Cleaning rods

I have been shooting and hunting for over 30 yrs. and now starting to change my ways for the better, what is the best cleaning rod outhere? I have always used a 3 pc brass rod as I thought this is soft enough not to hurt the crown and bore, But now there is the carbon fiber and many others, So should I stick with the brass rod or change?

The Outers pull thru system for me when I do a rifle's bore cleaning.
I usually just make a pass with a BoreSnake squirted with a little Ed's Red lube after shooting rifles.
I then spend more time cleaning/lubing the action, on an "as needed" basis.

By the way, did you read the article on gun cleaning/overcleaning bores theory in the recent NRA Rifleman mag?

Stick with brass however I do like bore snakes

I prefer making mine from drill rod -- one piece - 36" - this is long enough for most rifles -- I use nominal 3/16", 1/4", and 5/16" diameter rod for most all calibers. I prefer the smooth hard steel to soft alum or brass - I feel grit can be imbedded in the soft metal and not in the steel - others feel the soft material does less harm to the bore. To each his own poison -- my ha-penny

Cleaning rods

Get a dewey coated rod and a good bore guide for cleaning from chamber end.

Bore snakes are messy/dirty and are designed for compact "FIELD" use like the WWII military ones. Why or how they became so popular is a testament to their marketing to an uninformed consumer base.

Dewey's rod are great, for sure.
I wash then dry my Bore Snakes and reuse. I have never felt that they are any more "messy and dirty" than anything else.
To each his own, I guess.
They both serve a good purpose.
