308 Mauser Comversion

I would like to have a Mauser in a 308 cal, considering all the Mauser variations what would be a good variation to look for that would be strong enough and cheap enough to convert. I realize "Cheap" is a relitive term. I know that Century is selling Israli Mausers in 308 but in the event I can not obtain one I was looking or an alternate route,

Most mausers are long actions and therefore more appropriate to 30-06 than 308.

You're best bet is to find a Israel M98K Mauser that's already been rebarreled in 7.62NATO. Otherwise, it will be a money pit to rebarrel a M98 action to .308Win, unless you already have all the parts lying around.

My recommendation is to find a good M24/47, M48 in 8x57mm and shoot it. Unless you already have an limitless supply of free .308Win ammo, if will be cheaper in the long run to buy a few cases of 8x57mm ammo.

There some mid-length Mauser actions and almost all Large Ring M98's still needs the magazine box slightly reworked to fit and feed 30/06 rounds. It's not hard, but it's not a direct drop in. There is enough difference in the COAL between the 8x57mm and 30/06 to not be a direct swap.

Edit: Maybe it's Israeli, it has some strange markings.

Are the Israil Mausers that are available from Century any good or are they pitted and rusted and generally unshootable?

The Israeli Mausers are all pretty well used and have seen better days.
First thing you have to ask yourself is what you will be using the rifle for. If it's just to take out to plink with, you better have a lot of cheap .308 laying around(and if you do, tell me where I can find some!).
If you plan to build something custom, for target or hunting, start with an action and build that into something unique to you. Sure you go can out and buy a Remchesterby, but there isn't anything more satisfying than building your own custom rifle, accurizing it, and putting all the rounds into a 1" or smaller hole.

Actually the Mauser was designed for the mid length cartridge 8x57 which is right between the 7.62x51mm (308) and the 7.62x62mm (30.06). It is easier to convert the Mauser to feed the 308 than the 30.06.

I agree that the 98K is more than strong enough and a better choice than any of the 93 or 95 variants.
