it didn't look like I was going to make the build party, so i got some help localy and started building. I have finished demilling, and and considering whether or not to park the entire gun. on the one hand i like the patina and love the filled in markings, on the other hand there are some parts of the barrel that are real bad

but some bad wear on the barrel makes me think I should park the whole thing




the other thing is that if I just park the lower, and then build the gun, my rivets will not be parked. the thing that concerns me is the functionality of the levers after parking

one thing that amazes me about this gun is just how bad the outside of it looks when the inside looks to have never been fired. I am an 03 and normally, the bore and bolt look much worse than the finish on the gun

I was surprised how much work was involved in stripping down the rear trunion. The funny thing is that the rivet that I drilled perfectly down the middle was a lot more work than the one that I was off center on




I cleaned my wood up as best I could with thinner, acetone carb cleaner, etc and I still was not happy with it. We will see how big of a mistake putting it in the dishwasher was. It expanded about 100 thousandths. the buttplate no longer fits and I will have to file down the wood




On the front of the stock, I compressed it back wit a vice, using my sledge hammer to tighten it down. It now is an extremely tight fit, but it crack in the lamination a bit when I took it out of the vice



I finished cutting the upper rails the BCG does drop in and slides back and forth freely, however the slots in the rear trunion seem to tight to fit in all the way. I think they may need to be shaved down a bit or pressed in

Looks good so far. Are you going to leave the phosphate as the final finish?
If so, I would build everything up to a barreled receiver and then drop that into the tank with the other parts.

What do you plan on doing with the wood? Stain, oil, paint? I really like the
red color that Lancaster uses.
I wouldn't worry about the crack in the stock. What i've done before was drill out the hole
and glue a short piece of wooden dowel and then re install. That wasn't with a rifle stock but it'll work
and will be solid. I've always been told if you have to beat the stock into the receiver, grab some sand paper.

Get some trunnions, rails and a center support in the receiver and then you'll know if the bolt and carrier slide freely or not.

The stock will shrink as it drys out. I would not recommend taking wood off it. If you need a new stock, maybe someone will end up with a spare or two at the build party. If so, I'll stash them to send to you.

BTW, I hate demilling rear trunions.

I made the mistake of grinding/filing too much off of the rails before actually putting in the trunnions.

I suggest leaving them until you get them in there and then see if more needs to be removed. In one build, the rails were so sloppy the bolt would jump out sometime... do-over.

At the very least, clamp the trunnions in place and test it.

Congratulations, you're off to a great start. You will probably always remember your first build. If you have limited access to tools I suggest having extra flats and rivets on hand so that if something gets boogered up you can keep going while the tools are available.

For the buttstock you can glue a wood plug in the hole with the crack and then re-drill after it has dried. Find a way to inject some glue into the crack too if you can.

I posted that earlier. What does everybody else use to trim the rails?
After destroying 3 flats trying to use a dremel I got fed up and used my snips.
I cut right on the line and filed to fit. Perfect on the first try.

I used a dremel. i used the small thin wheel, and used 2 1/2 of them to do it. the key is to let the wheel do the cutting, don't force it keep the RPM up. of course I used a variety of files, emery boards and sand paper for the last 10%

Yes, AK builder flats need to have the top rails trimmed so the bolt carrier can slide and be feild stripped and the trunnions can be installed.

Im on my third build (of the same rifle ). I messed up the first reciever so bad, kalashnikov himself would probobly fly over here himself to punch me in the face.

mistakes I made with the first build:

-Bent the flat by cutting grooves in the bend lines with dremel that are nearly impossible to get straight, and bending by sandwiching between two pieces of 1/4" flat steel with a welded on concoction to clamp in my vice and then using a sheet metal hammer to slowy bend. It looked like a complete embarrasement.

-the instructions on where the inner placement of the rails I read were kinda vague, So they got placed at the wrong height.

-tried welding on the rails the plug weld way, after it was bent, and they just would not hold and made the outer reciever look even worse.

-heat treated the reciever and didnt give the upper rails any support when i quenched so when it warped it took the shape of a reverse football.

- half of my rivets had crooked heads from not crushing all the way.

at this point I pulled it back apart and ordered a new flat, and sat and thought out the next build and how to do better.

second build 1000% better & fully functional. How I fixed the problems below:

I buy the akparts.com reciever flats, so the top rails are allready bent and 90% trimmed.

1st -trimmed the rails for front and rear trunion while the reciever was still flat to ensure perfect fit and ease of fitting. (this is the only upper rail trimming you have to do, other then fine finishing.

2nd -welded the inner rails on with the reciever still flat to ensure a perfect match with the trunion, and easy clean welds.

3rd- was waaay more careful about cutting the bend groove lines straighter.

4th-bent it the same way as before

5th- used the same piece of steel I used to sandwich the bend to support the upper reciever when I heat treated it, worked great.

6th- cut small slits in my rivit shafts with a dremel to encourage mushrooming against the barrel (I press my barrel in the trunion first then rivit it to the reciever using the barrel as a bucking bar) worked great and held really tight.

the problems with this one were mainly cosmetic, as the rifle functioned great. problems below:

I tried stamping a model name and seriel number on it and got one of the characters upside down after all that work, so I did what any WECSOG graduate would do, I used body filler (Hey at least it wasnt bondo,it was a high quality polyester body filler ) to fill in the stamps and stamped on the other side.

the bend lines were still off, just a smidgen and just enough to bother me. People that I show it to tell me it aint that big of a deal. but I see that the same way as when a girl tells you "no it isnt small, its the perfect size".

So I recently pulled it back apart, (on a side when I pressed out the barrel, the rivets crushed very nicely against the barrel) now im gonna order my third flat and rebuild it again. I am highly confident it is going to come out nice this time. But I had such a blast being a completely cheap ba*tard, and learning from my mistakes.
