Saiga ideas needed

OK, so here is the skinny...

I want to modify my Saiga to have a few cool little features (I plan on keeping this thing pretty much stock)

Here is what I want to do.

1) Store the cleaning kit in the buttstock.
2) Store the cleaning rod below the barrel.
3) Mount a cool sling.

Now, someone did mention filling the buttstock with foam, doing a cutout for the cleaning kit and then making a trapdoor in the buttpad. Does anyone know what kind of foam I should use? Do I cut to form or just stuff it in there? What about the trap door? Is there a better way?

For the cleaning rod... how do I get the rifle capable of storing the cleaning rod securely without going to a full-on AK furniture conversion?

For the sling... Is it possible to mount a side sling mount on the forend and the buttstock without going to new AK furniture? If not, what are some cool and secure sling options? I would like something like a Giles Wilderness Tactical sling (or something of that nature) so I can access my pistol or sling the rifle over my back.

Any suggestions are appreciated. I am really stoked that I have this rifle now and I am looking forward to making it be more a part of me.

Here's an idea.. I saw a guy thread the barrel and make a metal tab to hold in the cleaning rod, the tab was held on by a muzzle nut.

It's not to hard to do a simple conversion. I'm going to try to make a few of these for mine till I get the parts and money for a proper conversion..



I've been seeing new AKs with m4 stocks on them. I read some people fix the stocks with a bunch of zip ties. Maybe you can buy a stock or grip that can store the cleaning kit. The polish use a UTG adapter on their beryls which is pretty cheap to buy. Saw a few russian ones also- pics below.

Just thinking out loud, maybe you could use the extra dense foam-insulation-in-a-can to uniformly fill the buttstock. Then after it's cured you could cut off the excess and chisel out the opening for the cleaning kit.

There are plenty of 3-point slings out there for shotguns and Mini-14s that have similar requirements as the Saiga. I'd probably go with something like this
that comes with a butt-cuff and a forend cuff that attaches to a standard sling swivel.


If you didn't want to go with the wrap-around cuff on the forend you might be able to use a snap-ring instead with some sort of attachment to the gas block (the old Israeli standby paracord perhaps).

Post pics when you're through, I'm considering doing the same thing with mine when I get it.

Before I converted my Saiga all I did was move the sling mount from the bottom to the side of he handguard.

Keep the saiga featureless. Here is one idea if you want a better stock for like 100 dollars.
