    Barrel cooling

The most drastic method I could think of... works very very well. Tried to heat it up this a.m. She gets hot, but cools off really fast. Fired a 6.5x284 20 times fast- got it real hot, with a std bull barrel. Then I fired 30 rounds quickly from this AR, and started the clock. Both barrels were just above 160F at the breech. Took 6 minutes for the AR to get back down to ambient 80F, the 6.5x284 was still 130F. So said the infared temp gun.

Are those threads or individual grooves stacked next to each other like threads?

looks like threads in one of the close ups, angled, i would assume lathe cut? Cool idea, definitely increased the surface area a bit. Much more than fluting.

It would be interesting to see if finer threads work better or worse, may give you more strength, for what its worth.

Neat idea. I wonder how it compares against the JP cooling fins that bolt on to the barrel?

Out on the prairie dog fields we used to just hang wet rags on the stainless steel rifle barrels.

I knew a guy who had a large cooler rigged up with racks and he would hang his rifles inside coolers filled with ice.

Another guy I knew had a blower hooked into an ice filled cooler and then had rubber tubes that came out of the cooler and plugged right into his chambers.

so long as your playing with stainless. I would be somewhat, not much, concerned about condensation forming inside the barrel with the blower. Prob. nothing to worry about though.

Question, are prairie dogs that much dumber than squirrels? Because every time i shoot a squirrel his buddies all bail into the holes for a while before coming back out. Do they just not get it, or are you really far away?

Not threads...just a bunch of grooves. Although, after I did it, I thought that an ACME die would do awsome work for something like this... if accuracy was not a issue- maybe on a 16" barrel (next time). I just can't ensure that the die will follow true to the barrel.

Just sold this upper this AM. She's gone! On to the next project.

Some of the benchrest guys pump cold water through their barrels between targets. I assume they run a couple patches through to dry it out prior to shooting again.

Sometimes you can get a town that is a mile square or more. You can shoot everything close and then shoot for the next 2 days at everything out past 400 yards. The noise puts them down but once you get past 300-400 yards it isn't loud enough to keep them down for long.

you know i was thinking about that but water is very heavy then i had a plan about making it more of a swamp cooler type arangement with a little pump dripping water on an inner mesh of brass wool inside a freefloat tube with a reservoir in the butt along with a pump

cause sometimes i got an itchy bump finger

maybe it would be better to just coil the barrel with the little copper icemaker fridge hose

I have shot them no further than 10 feet away from me and still have them come back up. I have shot a family of 25 squirrels that came out of the same hole before as well. When they are running around by the thousands a gunshot sound does not scare them down. What scares them down the most is when the seagulls or hawks start flying around and eating the carcasses.

Oh and my method for cooling down my barrel. I would buy those compressed CO2 canisters for dusting computers and give it a 15-20 second blast down my barrel. Since it is only dry air it will not corrode your barrel (it is designed for electronics!) and it blows out cold. I can usually get back into shooting in half the time it would take if i had just let it sit there. You can get these on sale at fry's electronics when they have their buy a 3 pack get a 3 pack free deal.
