    1911 gunsmiths? una pregunta

Over the years I have managed to collect components to build a 1911 .45, the only thing I'm short is a receiver. Can't build much of a gun without one. I've been looking for receivers and have found a couple of affordable complete guns that I'm willing to cannibalize. One of them is the Taurus PT1911.

Here's the "pregunta" (that's "question" for those of you not from kalifornia):

Is a Colt slide assembly compatible with a Taurus receiver?

I know you can MAKE anything work, but is it compatible like a Colt slide is compatible with a Springfield receiver. I'm not interested in doing a ton of machine work to "make it fit", and I know there is some work to fit the slide to the receiver, but I'm sitting on a colt 3 1/2", 5" and 6" assemblies, but no receiver. (no, they're not for sale or trade - unless you have a 1911 receiver - then we can talk 'cause I MIGHT have more than just these 3).

    Thanks
    Jeff

Might be a moot point as I don't believe the PT1911 is on the list.

Rock Island might be what you're looking for. You can get the standard GIs for $350ish?

Don't hack a PT1911 and if you have found one here in this great state, let me know because i'd like to buy it as a whole. Hack a rock island, they're cheaper anyway.

Barring any special design changes, the Colt slide should fit the Taurus frame. Whether it is a tight fit is more a matter of luck. It may even be too tight and require a bit of talent to file the rails, but this could work to your advantage and give you a really nice fit.

The other option is to buy a single shot upper and send the upper to a third party out of state, then DROS it as a single shot pistol (exempt from list).

            TopHat,

Thanks. That's pretty much what I needed to know. I have access to a Taurus, complete, but didn't know if the mating surfaces were compatible. My goal is to have a frame, and 3 uppers, one to suit at least 3 of my moods! I don't have an issue with the work to fit them, and actually look forward to it.

Thank you for sharing your knowledge.

            Jeff

No problem. Best thing to do, if you have both slide and frame in hand, is to measure the dimensions of the rail and ways. Then you'll know the total clearance between them as well. I believe you're looking for 0.003" vertical and horizontal clearance for a general street gun with decent accuracy. YMMV

Why don't you go for an 80% so that way you can get it right where you need it to fit all of your uppers.

                  just look for a frame.

The 1911 is a good gun and tearing apart a new 1911 which is complete is a waste of time and money. The frame can be bought for brownells at a cheaper cost and shipped to your FFL dealer. I would not use a stainless frame unless your slide is also stainless. The good way to go is to call around to the local gun shops and just tell them you are looking for a frame. You might luck out.

Unless LEO, it's pretty difficult to DROS a new frame from a dealer right now in CA........ but you might know f a loophole that I'm missing........
There are some people that it's just not worth engaging.

It's a muzzle BRAKE, not a muzzle break. Or is your muzzle tired?

In the odd case you run across an SW1911 receiver: Regular slides don't fit properly. I tried it. Not even close.

SJ, where can you buy an 80% single and/or double stack? Just finished milling and fitting an 80% AR, then I got interested on trying a 1911 or 2011 after replacing and minor smithing parts to my Springfield Milspec and Series 70 Gold Cup I wonder what the 80% look like and how much work is involve.
