Savage 12ga Model 720

I have my grandfathers shotgun and it has a approx 1/2" brass ring with what appears to be another ring of stainless steel that, as I understand, goes above/below the barrel loop depending on whether I'm shooting high brass or low brass. Does anyone know which side of the loop the brass ring goes for high/low brass?

I've called Savage and they cannot help me.
