Polytec M14 safety tab

is there a specific way to aply the safety on a M14/M1A? I just got this poly m14 and for some reason it seems to me that the safety doesnt actually engage.
I know you squeeze the tab on the trigger guard towards the trigger to apply. Mine doesnt seem to want to move in. is there a specific way the safety needs to be applied? Was gonna go shooting with it but now Im not sure. The gun is brand new never been fired. I got it from a calguns member.

Have you tried it with the hammer cocked?

Mine was the same way. When it was brand new I hardly budged. After playing with it and over some time it loosened up.

Ill try working it some more. I just wasn't sure if there was something actually wrong or it was too new. Just weird that the safety lever is stuck. Damn chinaman smoking dope that day
