Gun Blew Apart

Maybe not "blew apart" but certainly seemed that way for a second. I have a Kel-Tec 9mm that I have shot a gazillion rounds through (I've had it for 12 years now) and today the assembly pin was blown out of the pistol and the slide jammed. I cleared the jam pushed the pin back in, thinking I must have mistakenly not pushed it all the way in when I assembled the gun, and fired it again. Same thing happened. I stripped it down and found the recoil spring to be very loose. I can send it back to Kel-Tec but they said it would take up to 6 weeks. Since it is my preferred CCW, that seems like a pretty long time.

If anyone has experience with this and thinks it could be do to they almost nonexistent tension from the recoil spring I'll just replace it myself.

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated. It's boxed and ready to ship but I thought I'd check with you guys first.

I'd say take advantage of the lifetime warranty, don't go fixing stuff yourself until it's the last resort.

btw, you're not alone in the exploding gun department. I've had a M1 carbine explode on me before, and I tell ya, you really haven't dropped a brick until you have a rifle explode in your face.

Call Kel-Tec and let them know that this is your daily CCW piece. They may offer to expedite the repair of it. It doesn't hurt to try and see if they can put some priority on yours turned around quickly.

Burn it, drive over it with a semi, blast it with a shotgun, and toss it in the garbage than run out and buy a Glock.

I'd say work on an alternate carry piece until warranty work is complete.

I remember when I was working at Turners. The guy who had the Kal-Tec blow up on him at Angeles Shooting Range, brought it in to us to send back to Kal-Tec.

He brought it in a box, in pieces!

He was so, so lucky he was not injured or killed.

Wow, your a brave man. I don't have the courage to fire a kel tec at the range, let alone use it for my primary CCW.

Like I said I fired more rounds through this thing over the last 12 years than even my .22 and I've never had any problems until this. And even this doesn't raise any flags about Kel-Tec just the fact that it's been used a lot and needs servicing. I now have a Sig .380 that I'll be using it just feels weird cause I've had the Kel-Tec on my side for a long time.

I think DOMOKUN had the best advice. Call Kel-Tec and let them know it's your primary (loyalty card to be played). I'm an armorer from another manufacturer and turned a cracked frame around with a brand new one in one day. Good luck!

I guess if there was a 1911 or Glock that was as easy to conceal I would think about it but until then I'll stick with what works.

Thanks guys for the advice I shipped it off and am hoping to get it back within a few weeks.

Note: my buddy has a mini Colt .45 semi auto, I believe it's a 1911 but am not sure, that is VERY concealable. It was his dad's back up service weapon before he retired and gave it to him. It's from the 60's? maybe 70's and I would definitely sport one of those if I ever came across one for sale.
