Made a trigger shoe for my 1911

Newbie here but long time DIY guy. The narrow trigger on my 1911 bugs me so I went about making a shoe for it. (I am just a range guy- no carry or draw from holster.)

Took some 1.750" aluminum rod and bored a 1.400"d hole in it, Cut a .250" wide notch in it to a diameter of 1.500". Parted it off at right about .480".

Drilled and tapped it for some 4/40 set screws.

Cut it into quarters and went to town with a file making a couple shapes. (I prefer the curved one.)

Came out great is much more comfortable!

      😁Thanks!
But there are already several people that make them.

            Nice work.

I would have drilled and tapped the original trigger from the front so that I could use a single small screw from the front to hold the shoe in place without the ugly setscrews on the sides.
            That's my only feedback.

Yeah, I love tinkering with stuff. I don't know how many projects where I could just go buy something for $30.00 but NOOOOOOOOOOOO . . . I gotta end up spending twice that much on materials and a bunch of hours to make something. hahahha

(Luckily that wasn't so much the case here.)

I'm with you on that and I did consider that. But I couldn't really see how I could get a clean shot with an allen key or screwdriver into a front screw. Unless I trimmed the allen key short enough to fit inside the trigger guard and the thought of turning it a quarter turn at a time was giving me bad flashbacks from the top left motor-to-tranny bolt on a VW bug I used to have. So I passed.
                But I hear ya!

When working in triggerguards, I just hold a 1" long hex bit like these between my thumb and pointer finger:

If you need more leverage than you get with 2 fingers holding just the bit, you can slip the bit into a 1/4" combo wrench or use a chapman hex bit ratchet.

Or I have short-arm allen wrenches like these:

There are many ways to solve this problem.

And for that top left VW tranny bolt, use a ratcheting wrench.
