    45 Caliber Rifiling Button Needed

    Hello,

I have 2 antique 12" smoothbore barrels that I need rifled and after months of looking around, nobody does that work anymore. Does anyone have a 45 caliber rifling button that I can buy, borrow or rent ? Please send me a PM. Thanks

I can't help you with a button, but have you considered cut rifling?

      Hi Randall,

I did search around for gunsmiths who cut rifling and it's $300 per barrel, which is cost prohibitive. I figured if someone had a 45 caliber button that they used and don't need, I'd buy it from them.

The only people that usually have rifling buttons are people that use them for a living and it's uncommon for barrel companies to go out of business and then be found selling their tooling off on a forum.

I have seen rifling buttons being sold by a Ukrainian seller on eBay:

They do offer 45 caliber but you should probably make sure that you have the right size bore before you push the button through it.
They also sell reamers to size the bore correctly before button rifling.

You can't button rifle a barrel that has already been turned. and it's not as simple as pulling a button through the bore. the bore needs to be the correct size. The OD need to be one uniform diameter as the button displaces material thinner walls will not form rifling correctly. Not to mention lapping before and after buttoning. and not to mention stress relief and heat treat. And you think $300 is cost prohibative? I could write you a dissertation on what's involved. But that's here nor there.

What you need is either a rebore service or a reline service and those do in fact exist. I'm assuming it's a low pressure pistol caliber which would be a good candidate for relining. but you're still talking $300 per barrel.
