    Muzzle brake hardening

I?m building a 13? Galil SAR that needs to be featureless due to AW regs, as a mag lock is not available commercially for them.

I have piece of 1017 I can ?try? to turn into a brake to get the length I need.

In your experience, is erosion going to be an issue with 1017?

    Is hardening it sufficient?

Would I be better off finding a stainless steel material for this?

If 1017 is anything like 1018, you can only case harden it and that should be sufficient.

You can build a Muzzle brake out of aluminum if you wanted.

Hardening a piece of mild steel is a waste of time for a muzzle brake. just spin it up and run it. it will be fine. And so what if it does erode over time? parts wear out over time too.

If you want to harden it, 4140.

Thanks for the info guys. I’m not going to harden it, I was prob overthinking it.

Thread is 13x1. would you single point thread it or use a tap?

FWIW, I don’t know how to thread on the lathe yet, nor do I own a 13x1rh tap. So, I’m open to suggestions

If you don't know how to cut single point threads, a tap will be easier for you.

Not to mention he'll be most likely threading a blind hole. Which makes single pointing a real joy

since you say you do not know how to thread on a lathe. Use a tap.

Thanks guys. I'll use a tap

I'll get the hang of it eventually, some of the machines functions are still a mystery to me.
