Gas blocks?

Im trying to put a FF rifle length rail on a 16" middy but I cant seem to choose a good Low Profile gas block. It is a BCM middy with a F Marked FSB currently on there. Are there specific gas blocks that I need? Or will any cheap low profile gas block will work like a 60-100$ piece? It will be under handguards so looks is of no concern. Just Quality.

YHM Gas Block(s).. $20-$40


The rail is going to be a rifle length YHM Diamond FF rail w/ the end cap.

LaRue, PRI, DD, VLTOR... they're all good.

I'm not a fan of YHM - I think they make more machining mistakes than they should.

would there be a problem using a gas block like Larue and bridge over the bare metal thats left after removing the FSB on some aftermarket barrels ?

The YHM rail has enough room inside it to go over pretty much any of the low-profile gas blocks. If you want a lower priced one that will cover the scars from the taper pins then you can get the Midwest Industries one for $40

If you are planning on using the YHM end-cap then make sure your rail is a rifle-length rail (12") or else it will not be long enough to fully enclose the gas block and still allow you to screw in the end-cap.

Any steel gas block is good, no matter what the brand on the package is.
If you want to cover the scars on the barrel from the taper pins, LaRue or MI are good options.
For lighter weight, PRI, Vltor, JP, CMMG, Stag or YHM micro gas blocks are the ticket.

The most important consideration is to drill a detent in the barrel and install the block with rocksett or loctite to prevent movement.

Ah bloody hell. I thought it was just remove and replace haha..
I've got a drill press but I cracked the vise on it because its a cheap peice of crap.

What about clamp style gas blocks like Vltor and Daniel Defense? Would there be any modification needed to keep the gas block in place?


im really leaning towards that clamp Vltor. A calgunner PMed me with an offer for one but I had already ordered the larue. I might just trade it off on the FS section if my buddy doesnt want to buy it.

You want cheap and low profile? How about cutting down your FSB and cold bluing or duracoating it.

I like the all steel Model 1 with a weaver top rail. It always fits well and you can clamp the hell out of it, the thing never moves. Costs about $35.00 I think.
