    Barrel shortening question

What is the best way to shorten a tapered revolver barrel? Please explain in as much detail as possible. I have seen a few ways, but would like some more input.

This is re: the super blackhawk.

    best way= hard way

Make a mandrel- a donut whos inside contour that closely matches the taper of the barrel. THEN with the mandrel TEMPORARILY cemented on the barrel in the desired position, place barrel in 4 jaw lathe chuck, grabbing just the breech (forcing cone) end. Live center the muzzle. Skim the OD off the mandrel now, just to insure that it is l- and ll to the bore. Then 4 jaw the mandrel, turn barrel as desired, then execute the removal process of the temporary mandrel.
    Dun.

Thanks for the response, kinda what i was afraid of.

I think, as last night, we are going cut the barrel while in the receiver on a band saw. There is a flat on the top of the frame that should be true to the bore. We will have to make a shim because it tapers up towards the rear sight. After cutting we are going to true the end of the bore with a 90deg muzzle crowning cutter. then apply an 11deg muzzle crown.

At least that is the plan for now, have to see what ideas change when we get the revolver in the shop. I will take the mandrel into consideration.

Sounds just like I do them.
I usually make the donut from aluminum and use a single layer of paper to protect the finish.
Then tap the donut on to the taper until it locks into place.

well, just ordered a 79 deg muzzle crowning tool, 44 cal pilot, an ejector housing, ejector housing screw, and a bottle of cold blue for now. That should keep us busy for a little while at least.

Then i will have to get the ejector, spring, and a high visibility front sight. Looking at one of these, http://www.jackweigand.com/interfs.html

            The cement I speak of:

Locktite makes a "black" product- BAAAD stuff. I've used it to "glue" material to a faceplate or table (or barrel), then machine the part, then the remover takes it right off, without residue. You can even glue scope bases onto valuable guns that you donlt want to D&T, then take them off later, without any damage. Brownells sells it.
