The really old school height gauges use the same dimensions as jo blocks. That makes them useful beyond their original purpose. Life is good.

Are you talking about the space between the clamp and where you clamp the scriber or the indicator holder arm?
If so, that makes perfect sense.

You could use a centering gauge block that way to measure from a hole to the surface plate.

Do you have a gage block accessory set like this?

You can build any height you want and use it with the base on a surface plate as a very precise height gauge.
The heavy block in the lower right corner is the base and any of the black gauge holders let you build a stack of gauges to a specific dimension.Randall Rausch
