    threading a skinny barrel

Comments on this method from resident gunsmiths? I want to thread a Tikka t3x SuperLite.

I have making threaded shoulders just like he is talking about for 20+ years but I don't do them on bolt guns very often.

Tikka T3 lite barrels are usually 0.620" at the muzzle unless they are shorter than the typical ~23" length.
I use 1/2-28 or 9/16-24 threads depending on the caliber of the barrel.
Using threads at least 1/16" smaller than the barrel OD creates enough shoulder to tighten against.

Mine is a "SuperLite" which is about 23 inches iirc. The barrel comes fluted, but I'm considering getting 4 or 5 inches cut off the end too, to make sort of a half-@ssed SIG Cross out of it. It'll look a little goofy because the flutes will end at the shoulder. By the time I get a lighweight folding stock it could end up costing the $1700 a SIG Cross does and I'll have a hot mess of a rifle.

I have shortened and threaded skinny fluted barrels:

That barrel was a professional ordinance carbon15 barrel which were very skinny.

I wish I had a dollar for every time Mr Gavin says "precision".
Not so much in this vid, but a BUNCH in others!
