the "banned by name" rifles are by Maker and Model. If either the Make or Model are different, it isn't banned. If you are the maker (I assume you're talking about the FMBUS application), then it wouldn't be possible to make a rifle on the banned list.
Personally I'd pick a model name that raises less eyebrows though. It can literally be anything.

To take a step back, are you building a receiver from a flat/80%?

Are you buying an AK from an FFL?

Why are you entering the AK into CFARS's
Rule 1- ALL GUNS ARE ALWAYS LOADED

Rule 2 -NEVER LET THE MUZZLE COVER ANYTHING YOU ARE NOT PREPARED TO DESTROY (including your hands and legs)

Rule 3 -KEEP YOUR FINGER OFF THE TRIGGER UNTIL YOUR SIGHTS ARE ON THE TARGET

Rule 4 -BE SURE OF YOUR TARGET AND WHAT IS BEYOND IT
      (thanks to Jeff Cooper)

Building an ak74 from a flat
Entering into cfars for a unique serial number for my build. Am I missing something or doing this wrong?

It won't be banned by name as the name list is from manufacturers from years ago.

Your will be legal if compliant with current rules on features / featureless status.

The law banning all AR clones and AK clones was overturned for being vague.

              This might help you out.

                    Randall

Is there a depth requirement for California or the feds?

                      Yes.

The feds specify minimum 0.003" deep and characters must be no smaller than 1/16".
CA tells you to follow the federal law.
