About 10-15 thousandths of an inch thick case hardening, according to this article.

You are going to want carbide to cut through the hard skin.
Then blast the whole barrel and park the whole barrel.
Plug the bore on both ends and avoid blasting around the gas port.
Then pull the plugs and park the barrel.
The park won't hurt the nitriding in the bore.Randall Rausch
