    AK flat press question

How large of a press do I need for an AK build? Will a 6 ton work? Harbor Freight has them for about $75, and if it'll work I'm going to get one.

12 is fine, 20 is the way to go, but there is less margin for error.

The 12 ton was barely adequate to bend the flat. If you have the bending jig with the top rail step down, a 12 ton press will not make it satisfactorily.

I picked up one of the 6 ton presses due to space limitations. And it works fine for bending flats, I have bent 4 so far without issues.

I have also been able to remove both barrel pin and barrel with it, without problems.

        YMMV

How about bending a flat with a leaf brake? I removed the barrel pin with a bench vise. Pressed out the barrel with a gear puller, copper washer and a carraige bolt and nut. I havn't been able to get any 100% receivers so i'll have to bend up a flat.

the main issue with the smaller presses is the limited clearance of the A-frame. i measured and my ak-builder jig will not fit. i got the 12, on sale with a coupon it was only around $100. i've used it on several automotive projects also although it isn't tall enough to do axle bearings.
all the reports of brake bending are bad. a press brake is supposed to work.
a 40T will do anything. when we were bored in the shop we used to squash thinsg. turn pennies into quarters.
