    Home Built Featureless AR-15

After all these years I've finally decided to get a little bit modern and build an AR-15 in 5.56 /223 . I want to go featureless as I don't really like integral magazines. I found a post by Randall stating that most 16 inch barrels are 16.2 inches, I have no desire for a flash suppressor or a muzzle brake ( I don't find my 223 Savage 110 too loud or too much recoil).

The question is: Cut the threads off and recrown the barrel or add a thread protector. Will the thread protector need to be pinned and welded..

    Thanks, Jim

Add a thread protector. The threads are longer than .2", and it saves you some optikns for later.

The thread protector doesn't need to be pinned or welded, since your barrel is over 16".

        Add a thread protector.
It does not need to be perm attached.

16" barrels are rarely long enough that you COULD cut off the full length of the threads and recrown the barrel and the barrel still be over 16" long.

Just stick a thread protector on there, and leave the threads in case you decide you want something on it later, the barrel should be at least a little over 16" from end to end, the threads don't get counted in the measurement.
