Winchester model 70 safety plunger replacement

Hey model 70 gurus,

I have a pre-64 model 70 that does not lock the bolt back when the safety is in the back position. I have determined that the safety plunger is deformed which allows the bolt to rotate when the plunger is forward.

My question is how do I replace the safety plunger once the firing pin assembly has been removed from the bolt?

What specific part number on the diagram are you talking about?



If it's #40, you remove the safety lever and the plunger and spring come out after the lever is lifted up.

For instance, to remove the firing pin assembly the safety lever needs to be in the middle position. Does it need to be in a certain position to remove it from the assembly?

Not really but plan on fully stripping the shroud.
Remove the firing pin stop screw.
Compress the spring, pull off the E clip, slide out the firing pin.
Then knock out the roll pin and lift the safety out.
Watch out for the detent and spring to jump out as you lift the safety out.
Clean out everything and re-grease while you have it all apart.

No it does not. Drive the #8 pin through to the bore of the breech bolt sleeve. It takes a mighty small, short starter type punch. Long skinny punches seem to slip out easier and mar the finish. Hold the sleeve good and solid in a vise or it will squirrel away on you when you tap the punch. Wisners has good quality new made parts, Midwest has new Winchester parts.



Pre 64's don't have an Eclip they have a firing pin sleeve and it comes off somewhat like a 1903 Springfield. Compress the spring and sleeve a bit and turn the sleeve 90 degrees to index the flats on the firing pin. I have a piece of 3/16 flat stock with a hole in it one drill size over FP diameter that I hold in a vise to do this. E clip guns require the same tool but the hole is open on one side with a knife edge so you can get between the clip(retainer), washer, and spring. This little tool makes a hard job easy.
