Series 80

Can the series 80 safety be removed without any problems. And then will it work like a series 70?
I have a colt officers series 80 and a Kimber CDP ultra. Both have had problems with the series 80 function keeping the gun from firing.
Any thoughts.

You can remove the safety easily. There's a "spacer" available to go into the frame cutout. The plunger and spring in the slide can be removed and nothing is needed to fill the hole. I have several Series 80 slides, without the spring and plunger, on standard ("Series 70") frames, and they run without a problem.

For Colt, you need to get a conversion shim.

Does the spacer go in the frame? What happens if you don't put in the spacer?
On my CDP Kimber I removed the spring and plunger from the slide without doing anything else and it seems to work fine.
Haven't touched the Colt yet.

Series 80

Sear and hammer will be loose inside the frame, yes shim go inside side of the frame. I use it all the time.

I would figure out why the series 80 does not work right. Then consider a change. Series 80 is a proven, reliable system.
Have an experienced 1911 user or gunsmith take a look.
