PRS style long range gun builder in SoCal area??

Was looking into getting a custom long range bolt action rifle built. Any recommendation on builders in the socal area preferably in LA but wouldn't mind driving up to Ventura or down to San Diego.

Is he crotchety, curmudgeonly, perhaps gruff but ultimately helpful and extremely capable?

Because if not, OP, look elsewhere. That's who set up my mid range rig. You need crotchety at a minimum.

Been gone too long. It's been 15 to 20 years since i had to shelf my guns. Those early years sucked.
I really miss the good old Pomona Gun Shows.

Yes, go see Randall when you have the rifle components in-hand. Because if you show up without having all the parts ready to go, he will tell you to reschedule.

Do you already know exactly what you want, e.g. action, barrel/chambering, trigger, stock, brake etc? He has reamers for most of the common cartridges (and many uncommon ones too) but if you are chambering some wildcat then you will need to supply the reamer, either buy or rent.

What parts do you already have, e.g. donor action, barrel blank, recoil lug (if not integral to the action)?

Don't have any parts at the moment. Was at the range a few days ago and a buddy had me shoot his long range precision build and I fell in love. Talking with him and doing some research online i'm leaning towards something chambered in 223AI. Looks like I can shoot and fire form factory 223 rounds and then reload. I just want something that I can shoot hence the caliber without breaking the bank and I don't want it to be a safe queen.

Any recommendation on an action? Barrel contour?

                    Custom work costs $$$

And while 223AI is cool, I would not consider it ideal for “long range” which to me is 800+ yards, or ideal for the PRS game, for which the majority of targets are 1-2MOA size and are 400-1000 yards distance.

Don’t get me wrong, even regular 223 can ring targets at 800 yards (80 grain bullets and no wind) but if you really want what the PRS guys are shooting:

Custom action: Defiance Tempest, Curtis Axiom, etc

6mm caliber, popular cartridges right now are 6 Dasher, 6 GT, 6 BR/BRA/BRX, 6x47 Lapua.

Heavy Palma (or heavier) contour barrel, 26” finished length (or shorter if they use a suppressor), 7.5 twist, from Bartlein, Krieger, Hawk Hill, Proof Research

Chassis stock: MDT ACC, Masterpiece Arms MPA Matrix, XLR Envy Pro, KRG Whiskey-3 etc. with weight kits.
Traditional fiberglass stock: Manners or McMillan

                    Scopes:
Athlon, Burris, Vortex (Strike Eagle/Viper PST) on the low end.
Bushnell (DMR-II), Riton, Nightforce, Leupold, Vortex (Razor) in the middle.
Kahles, Zero Compromise, Tangent Theta on the high end.

I’m just relaying what I am seeing.

Also, PRS Blog has a lot of big-data driven information on what the pros are doing/using.

As you're already reloading you might consider going to some of more common readily available calibers.

While i really enjoy my 6.5x47L, i did just purchase a 6.5 Creedmoor barrel for the rifle as i can more easily secure ammunition for it should i travel or compete etc. plus prices for those components have become much more affordable of late.
