    Case stamping for real?

I've been sitting on a pile of parts for years and decided to take a look at the current state of home building. Anyway, I came across these while looking into home building for California.

Main question: Is that cartridge stamping requirement actually in effect?

In order to get added to the roster, a handgun must include the microstamping feature.
This is stopping pretty much ALL new handguns from being able to be added to the roster even if they met the drop safety test standards and have a loaded chamber indicator and a magazine disconnect.

Self-made handguns can only be made as single-shots now.
You can not self-make a semi-auto pistol anymore because of the microstamping, loaded chamber indicator, magazine disconnect and roster/drop safety testing requirements.

        Hey, thanks for the reply.
Do you know where I can find more specific details regarding the temporary alterations to single shot and the microstamping? Depending on how it's worded I think I might be able to work something out.
The drop test, I'm not terribly sure about. Assuming it's not 200 dollars (plus lab fees) and needing to submit 3 samples.

Sounds like you waited about 11 years too long to build your semi-auto handguns.

Temporary alteration to single shot and then later conversion to semi-auto ended in 2014.
It's illegal to convert a single shot into a semi-auto for roster avoidance purposes since 2014.
If you made semi-automatic handguns back then, you had to register them back in 2018.
It's no longer possible to register semi-auto handguns that you made before 2014.
You can only make single-shot handguns today.

Would building up a firearm on the certified sales list still require the microstamping and drop testing?

Yes. Because you are making a new firearm. You cannot physically make the same gun as the original manufacturer. "Copies" aren't grandfathered in, only the exact firearm make and model. As much as you want to have this work it just isn't possible anymore. If you want an off-roster anything, buy one PPT or convince an out-of-state parent/child to gift you one for your birthday.

If you are a gun manufacturer that has a model on the roster, you can make as many of them as you like.
If you are NOT the manufacturer of any of the ones already on the roster, copying one will not work because the copy will NOT be made by the company who has the model on the roster.
You have to mark the gun with YOUR name or the name that's on your 07FFL if you are a licensed manufacturer.

There is literally no way around the law that you could make your own semi-auto handgun anymore.
They have it buttoned down pretty good.

The easiest solution is to just BUY one of the guns that's on the roster.

Single action and single shot are very different things.
For a magazine fed pistol, you have to go single shot.
                    That means no magazine capacity.
You will need to permanently affix a plug within the frame where the magazine goes so that no magazine can be installed.

For a revolver, you can do single action but you also have to meet the minimum barrel and overall length requirements of the single action exemption.
Barrel has to be over 3".
                    Overall length over 7.5".
Cylinder has to hold 5 or more rounds.

Yeah, the idea at the moment is to design and fabricate a carbon fiber/polymer frame with at least one mag blocking floor built in to take a screw down feed that holds one round and fire it single action. As much trouble as it might be, I enjoy aspects of the challenge.

Don't forget that you have to apply to CADOJ for a SN BEFORE you build it and send pictures of the SN on the gun within 10 days after recieving the SN from DOJ.

Might as well make your magazine well insert out of 17-4 stainless steel and kill two birds with one stone:

I might try working out the strip of metal into the frame as a kind of reinforcing bar, keeping the block and frame as a single piece during the print process. Probably an irregular shape with enough flat surface for the SN to show in a window.

You need about 0.83 cubic inches of 17-4.
                              That's a bar 1/4" x 1" x 3.33" long
