    Gun safe humidity

I have a temp gauge and humidity meter in my safe. I have two Golden Rods in a 32 gun safe.
What humidity in your safe are you experiencing?

I'm inland empire so not nearly as much moisture as you probably get up there.
I use Eva-Dry 333's in my safes and recharge them about every other month. I also have all my long guns in Bore Stores and the handguns in good soft cases for extra protection.

My safe's humidity stays around 40-45% with one goldenrod and a dehumidifier running on the basement. I haven't seen rust since I started using the dehumidifier. My safe is smaller than yours.

Be sure to calibrate your meter if you haven't already. I have two, one is off by 2% and the other by 8%. You use salt and water to get a known humidity level in a sealed environment. There are lots of tutorials for this on the web.

I'd try making jerky in your safe with all that heat in there from those rods.

My 50 cubic ft safe is at 34% with one golden rod according to my kestrel meter.

My safe is in the house.

Kestrels are very well calibrated. A cheap humidity gauge is probably not very accurate. I bought one years ago from radio shack.. they had about 10 different ones in the cabinet all turned on for display.... they showed a difference of about 20%!!!!!!!!

Ever since I moved in with a woman, my gun safe has been in the garage, yet I have had zero rust problems. The garages have been in Fair Oaks, Placerville, Rancho Cordova, and now Las Vegas.
I have not monitored the humidity inside the safe. I have not used a dehumidifier rod while the safe has been in the garage: winter, summer, hot, cold, wet, or dry. My explanation for the lack of rust is the safe contents undergo slow temperature changes. Had I used a rod to heat the inside of the safe, anytime I opened the safe door and let cold air come in contact with warm guns, the guns would have “sweated” and rust would have been a likely result.

Yeah, I call fraud on "opening the door to the safe and the goldenrod warmed guns sweated". Not how the Dew-point works. If you said "I opened the fridge and warm air caused my cold beer bottles to sweat", that's more believable.

Of course, I don't know about flying planes, maybe ice build-up at altitude works differently...but that's not what we're talking about here.
