Thank you ARFrog, appreciate the encouragement.
Honestly, I didn’t take those courses either. I was in my 20’s before I started Gunsmithing. And even later for machining. I’ve been very blessed.Last edited by Dave Hoback; 10-31-2019, 2:51 AM.Comment

You're going to need to grow some thicker skin, no one hijacked your thread, and you don't have control over who can and can not comment on your posts. sorry this is the web and you get all flavors.I posted a thread in Manual Rifles showing the first part of this. But it was hijacked by someone with an axe to grind. So instead of continuing there, I figured put a fresh one here where it belongs.
I’ve used the diy bolt lift for years in my built bench rest Savage, but have wanted to make one machined from Titanium for sometime. So while I’m waiting for a barrel to finish my P80 SC build, decided it was time. Grabbed some Tungsten Carbide rod and cut a small piece.

Drilled a flat bottom hole in the Bolt Assembly Screw(BAS) and pressed in & secured the piece of Tungsten.

The first part was making the “Lift” plate with a bearing ball in the middle. I had some 12mm Titanium rod. I turned it on my milling machine, creating a shoulder to slip in the cocking piece sleeve snugly. Then drilled & pressed in a 5mm Si3N4(Silicone Nitride) bearing ball.

End result is a pretty cool Titanium lift kit using ultra hard surfaces(the harder the better!)

I also posted this over on Savage Shooters..where I’m a little better known. I have enough materials to make a few of these and I’m giving them away over there. (I don’t do any of this for money) They we’re spoken for in a few hours..LOL. But I’ll likely do some more in the future.
Oh and surface grinders are not one dimensional. you've never seen form grinding have you?
Still waiting on the "several pics"Comment

Man, Titanium turns nicely, but gotta be careful of it igniting from heat! LOL! I need to install a mist cooling system to really do some of the other stuff I would like.
Cool thing being able to make your own things. And coming out as well or even better than retail products is an awesome thing.Comment

Air blast works better and is cleaner, Ti is nasty crap to cut. Very hard on toolingMan, Titanium turns nicely, but gotta be careful of it igniting from heat! LOL! I need to install a mist cooling system to really do some of the other stuff I would like.

Did a couple more today. Switched to 4mm bb’s. The first set & these others are gifts for few that PM’d me. Someone else is even sending me a couple spare Assembly Screws he had. Good bunch of guys over on Savage Shooters.Comment

Apparently sarcasm is lost on some. But then I’m not a “real” machinist. No, I’m just a one armed, disabled cripple who really loves working on/building firearms & making custom knives. Oh..and sharing a thing or two with others, or maybe a manufactured part here & there, when I can.., even have given away several custom knives. All because I’ve never let the DOLLAR be my god. I never wanted to exploit what I love for money.
But that’s me.Last edited by Dave Hoback; 10-31-2019, 4:19 PM.Comment

I apologize ARFrog. I should have more clear. It’s called a Bolt Lift Kit. Savage rifles are notoriously difficult with Primary Extraction. That is when the bolt is rotated upward(lifted), this camming against the the rear baffle and pulling the the spent case part of the way from the chamber.
This initial action called “Bolt Lift”, can be be considerable on many Savages. The Bolt Lift Kit goes in the bolt, just under the Assembly Screw holding the firing pin/spring in. It brings the rotation, metal to metal contact to a much, much smaller point of contact...in this case, only the area point the ball bearing is contacting the surface of the BAS.
End result is a lighter bolt lift, and in some cases(like mine), MUCH lighter & smoother Primary Extraction. (Bolt Lift). Which makes the shooting experience much more enjoyable. And better performance for quicker follow shots when needed.. for instance in competition & hunting.Last edited by Dave Hoback; 10-31-2019, 4:33 PM.Comment
