Barrel Nut hard to remove

Im having a really though time removing my barrel nut on my AR.

I have it in a vise and im using a Magpul Bev Block and a Magpul wrench. I've tried to use a heat gun but it wouldn't give any. Then I use a blow torch and it wouldn't move at all. I've used to use a hammer against the armorer wrench it still not moving. I've tried using all the suggestions on Google and none of them have worked.

Im pretty sure im turning it the right way. Im wondering if I should get a upper vise block and if tht would work better.

Anybody have any suggestions on what to do? A better breaker bar or maybe use a cheater bar?

Last option would be Randall but i'd like to exhaust all of that since I've bought all these tools so I could build an upper myself.

Treat it with clp or something, leave the barrel upright so it can penetrate the threads for like a day. See if that helps.

At some point you do have to weigh the price of breaking a part and letting a pro do it.

Or find a bigger beefier friend to turn the wrench 🤣

Do NOT use heat with an aluminum reciever and a steel barrel nut as the heat will cause the aluminum to expand, making the barrel nut more difficult to remove.

What you need is more leverage and probably a better way to hold the reciever.

This is how I do it:


Any reciever block which only holds from the bottom is NOT going to be safe past about 80 ft-lbs without damaging the reciever.
Clamshells will damage receivers at about 100ft-lbs.
I use a pair of blocks and I can exceed 250 ft-lbs without damage to a receiver but my setup only works for flattop receivers.

Not everyone has a Kurt vise and a Bridgeport. But that would be the way.

I finally got it removed. Last night I sprayed it down with WD40 penetration oil and left it up right. I went out the whole day and finally came back home tonight. The receiver was still oily.

Also I had bought a 3 foot pipe as a cheater bar. I figured this was going to be easy job. I put the pipe on my breaker bar and it was attached to wrench. Tried to turn and it wasn't move at all! I tried to adjust it as different spots and no help.

I had given up at this point and was just going to send it in. Went back in the house but for some reason I decided maybe I should try to move it the other way. put the wrench and cheater bar on and turned it right, it moved slightly for some reason. Then I tried to moved back counter clockwise and bam, it went and I was able to take it off!

I don't know why it wasn't moving till i went right and then left but i'm happy I saved myself some money.

Still will be sending you a barrel to get pin and weld Randall.
