    Cracked barrel?

Just picked up a used ultra compact 1911 springfield noticed this on the barrel. Does it need replacement?

No. It's fine. Some 1911 barrel makers heat braze the chamber/locking lug end to a standard barrel blank. Many have done it that way for years. What you are seeing is the joint between the two. It is done from a manufacturing/cost saving approach. Rather than machine a complete barrel from a solid piece of stock, the more intricate chamber end and locking lugs are machined and then a barrel is fit to it. If you look real close you will also see a radial joint line at the mouth of the chamber.

Springfield Armory's usual barrel is this two piece design, even if the pistol is marked NM.
buy a SA 1911 (of which I have 4) get an already broken barrel.
I do not recall hearing stories of these barrels coming apart though. And if they did, SA would replace the barrel and cover any damages to the gun.

        enjoy the gun.
