I always chase those pivot and takedown detent holes before assembly. I use a #40 drill bit in a pin vise. You could have finish buildup in there.

A guy took mine off a couple years ago and I meant to make sure I watched him put both back in. Somehow his slight of hand got the better of my old eyes.

This would be a great Jeopardy question, though.

The hole where the detent and spring goes is very very snug coming out (inserting in is fine but coming out to mate the takedown pin is very snug).

The hole is so snug that the detent does not even come out far enough to mate the takedown pin. This is on a lower I bought few years ago along with whole bunch other parts.

Should I tap the detent out (using a punch) far enough so it can catch the take down pin or does that hole needs to be re-drilled a little bigger?

When parts don't fit freely in a hole, I use a drill bit or reamer to clear any burrs that are causing the problem.

Thanks SkyHawk and ar15barrels, I will do just that (using a bit). I think I have a set of round/needle files somewhere, let me see if that will open up a little to make it work before drill.
